The cathedral of Cologne is one of the most visited landmarks in Germany. The building is 157 metres high, making it the tallest twin-spired church and the third tallest church in the world. The construction of the gothic church began in the 13th century. During World War II, most of Cologne’s inner city got destroyed, just the cathedral stayed almost completely intact, which was referred to as a wonder by many local people.
One of the many highlights inside the impressive church is a window designed by visual artist Gerhard Richter, which was revealed in 2007. It is reminiscent of his painting “4096 colours” and an abstract collage of 11.500 pixel-like squares randomly arranged by a computer. Cologne Cathedral is located right next to the central train station as well as Museum Ludwig, one of Germany’s finest museums of contemporary art.
