There’s no doubt that Yoshi Wada is renowned among music fans despite the recent ambient and environment music revival. Yoshi Wada, a world legendary music composer, performer as well as the pioneer of drone and ambient music, who was based in NY from 1960, and he passed away this May. The tribute concert for him was held on 18th December in Hokuto, Yamanashi in Japan.
The concert was performed by ten artists and featured two Japanese globally emerging contemporary music artists, FuI|||||||||||TA and Koushiro Hino exclusively composed and produced the new musical piece for the concert and of course the piece was tributed and inspired by Yoshi Wada.
The whole piece was ensemble and as if it had a narrative with the space and the location of the area surrounded by the National park. Even the sound of the wind from the Yatsugatake mountains outside was becoming an inspirational sample and improvised as an installation. Elements of drone and Muzak were divinely orchestrated by all the profound peaceful sounds.
The selected venue was an old local community space in Hokuto where was very spacious square with sliding high ceiling space with flat floor ( no steps or slope ) must have been a challenge to decorate and design in such a refined and minimal style that even led to daydreaming. The space itself had an acoustical effect reminiscent on church. There’s no doubt that you could find such a raw venue in the Tokyo area. It is a very profound concept and case of sustainable development for arts and rural communities also.
And overall the atmosphere of the concert was stoic and well designed for sound and the space which was genuinely dedicated and cared for by punters, organizers, and artists.
It was certainly a privilege to be at an exceptional tribute for Yoshi Wada in such a quality and unique environment, especially for the last full moon of the year.
