This abandoned concrete building surrounded by pine trees in Fregene, a peninsula resort about an hour drive from Rome, Italy. Casa Sperimentale is one of the most unique brutalist style architecture works in Europe. It was built in designed for purpose of a beach house in the popular resort of Casa Albero in the 1960 to end of 1970. Casa Albero was established and became a cultural flagship then this Casa Sperimentale added an architectural project to be experimental when it was at the centre of cinema and fashion : the Albero was known for a film location in “The White Sheikh” which is the first solo directed film of Federico Fellini, who shot some of the scenes of Juliet of the Spirits and La Dolce Vita in the large pine forest where was built, and where Fellini had a summer house. And this Casa Sperimentale took seven years to built.
After their peak of the cultural and arts phenomenon era, not only this culturally experimental architectural building got neglected and abandoned which led to the current stage of at risk but also in Europe as well as in Japan. Last year in 2022, one in Ginza Japan, Nakagin Capsule Tower which was known for great metabolism architecture building designed by Kisho Kurokawa, was demolished after the years of deterioration to be sustainable. Some of these capsules were taken to some museums and public sites to remain as design heritage.
This Casa Sperimentale project has been researched by various architecture firms and city development associates in Italy as well as over Europe for the last decade or so. And the restore movement commenced since 2020 inch by inches amongst the original architect and project team of Casa Sperimentale. There’s a regular visit tour is held and its a popular tour which is recommended to consider joining the tour to visit the site in person. There are some books published by various organizations also in case if interested in further reading or support.
Recently, the research went on to display at the Weissenhof Gallery in Stuttgart in Germany as the opening exhibition for the 100 Years of Bauhaus events program.
As part of the program, this footage shows 3D rendered the site with beats vibrating and how experimental the brutalism design details this building is.
It was documented in digitized by two 3D designers in 2018 for an educational legacy in the experimental design history to pass on to younger generations.
