Sonic Space Design – A perspective on community environmental development

Music / sound is an important element for spaces in terms of physics and mind engagement. Whether it’s a physical space of a public space, or open communal spaces – sonic design can impact engaging with our daily life and is a part of an urban development to support to add value to a local community environment.

Case 1 :

Many commercial properties however play smash hits music or selected music channels to play repeatedly a certain style music to make you feel like you are being a part of domestication so called, “the consumer brand”. This is certainly another level of engagement and it is different from the engagement of sonic architecture or experience effect which subtly engages one’s synopsis and the environment where developed and cultivated by its community in daily life.

Case 2 :

Music especially in terms of this content enhances one’s patterns and neuron function. It is so called wellness as well as a subtle significant effect on physics.

Sound nowadays is utilized to remedy such as for cancer patients. These are plopped by frequency, patterns, and often use field recording sounds of Mother Nature. Music concrete for example, an ambient music is often categorized in this. Even if the location is based on an industrial car park or in the middle of urban or suburban shopping mall, or more brutalism architectures, the layers of a concept of local community, utilities, and organic sense such as bio philistinism design seems to bring more olive branches to sense of wellness, real estate, and educationally sustainable in community design. There’s an interesting case of similarities : a children hospital in Helsinki opened an opportunity for the collaboration with the soundscape design project of Aalto University’s Media Lab in Finland which won the international sound design award 2019. It was a color and floor theme of the clinic with loudspeaker pan phonics. Such certain facility become more installations or vibrant flagship by the event to nurture children. Often public space with cold or industrial impressions can be modified to the space where provides a cultural, educational, and community environment. For another example, M-park in Kawasaki, Japan is a good case. They built for developing a community environment and often presents a weekend market and free Noh bunraku theater evening at the site of car park. Kawasaki city has rich greenery and Noh-Theater : owns an unique culture with depth of history of the industrial and racial issues.

Case 3 :

Sound design goes well with this environment planning patterns. London-Tokyo based MSCTY Global ( the organization of sound architectural agent ) activity is a good example. They process sounds, arts, and events well with architectural concerns to bring remedy and environment as long term outcomes ( I am not here to enhancing academic or contest points at all, in fact that more of my personal interest and professional background in hospitality, real estate, and PR therefore my own perspective foresee as sounds in space are tangible value and entire theme of sustainability ).

These cases lead to outcomes of value, so called the quality of internal and façade. It also leads to community sustainable design. It is an official education assets for next generation.
