Restaurant with accommodation facilities, Auberge is a form of establishment. Once someone, a costume designer made the quote for home as “ more than it is – warmth and bed”. Auberge would be like a home away from home accommodate by chef’s.
Auberge in general is more featured on restaurants and food ingredients than actual hotel services. Auberge itself became more popular in 1990’s since the Michelin’s epicurean guide books became popular. More Auberge style accommodations started opening globally in a specific area, especially where food and agriculture have higher standards in the countryside. Some seek a quality of spring waters which is geographically and landscape wise essential.
Since it originally started in France and plenty of Auberge in Japan serves French and Japanese fusion gourmets. More Japanese style Auberge are opening and for example, the one in Kamakura, Matsubara-An where is known for soba noodle restaurants opened recently instead of they closed Tokyo branch in Harajuku Quest building during the pandemic. It makes more sense to dedicate their full experience in the one site.
In the resort of Izu peninsula, there’s a town called Atami where an old onsen resort and Geisha culture remains. Once Atami went quiet and stale in a tourism market then redeveloped by locals and developers. There’s a profound fusion of new perspective and old legacy coherent now that new generations start to relocate and more visitors.
I found an auberge in Atami where they serve seasonal local ingredients with Japanese French fusion gourmet meals.
Each suite has an onsen with an ocean view which is calm and magnificent.
There’s a fitness facility within the hotel which can be useful apart from there are nice hills to walk around to enjoy scenery and local crafts.
Famous mandarin fields and horizontal view of the peninsula with the bridge ( megane-bashi ) between Atami and Yugawara is located within a good distance : This is one of the views of “The fifty-three stations of the Tokaido Road” known as between Tokyo, Kanagawa to the destination Kyoto. It recalled as Haiku and especially in Hiroshige Utagawa’s Ukiyo-e wood-print painting of travel location journals in Edo period ( Ukiyo-e : pictures of floating fleeting world ).
Alternate to Auberge, there’s numbers of “Hatago-ya” which are the original of accommodation in the Edo period along the Tokaido where they provide guest and horse accommodation with seasonal local meals.
Hakone is another neighbor area ( cross the mountain:)) the alongside, this accommodation, “Fujiya” is a famous hotel ( this is more of larger hotel accommodation as cultural heritage than Auberge or Hatahoya. It’s the known hotel where Jim Morrison, Mishima, John Lennon and Yoko Ono number of artists stayed and these days are more open to younger and casual visitors also. Another worthy place to visit ).
If you are not too epicurean to enjoy chefs’ own meals with seasonal local ingredients with slow and secluded services with cozy boutique suites then auberge would not be an appropriate place to spend some time with…There’s more plenty of options for 24/7 services, larger facilities with different concepts upon the preferences you can be entertained by.
