Greetings! Here is the glimpse of three music recommendations around June 2024.
Kin Leonn | Mirror in the gleam (Vinyl release)
Singaporean ambient/electronic music producer, Kin Leonn released the album “Mirror in the gleam” (originally the album was released last November from Kitchen Label). I personally enjoyed listening to this beautiful album a lot last year and fortunately got to see him perform in Kyoto last November which was quite inspiring. His performance style was like playing piano then as if you were at a jazz or classical piano concert. Leonn is also known as film soundtrack composer as well as a remixed producer for the electronic melodic music legend, Moderat also. The album itself has a very textured by a various sounds in organic material, field recordings, and electronic sounds which tapestries slowly and weaves beautifully as well designed ambient music. It gives us a nice and gentle balanced “totonou” feel and brings us to pay attention to our presence in the visual while and after you listening to.
Ayatake Ezaki| Hajimari No Yoru (A night of the beginning)
Japanese piano composer, Ayatake Ezaki is known for film, television series, and theatre production soundtrack composer. Ezaki also known as keyboard player for WONK and millennium parade as well as the producer for various major artists such as Genshi Yonezu. Ezaki’s latest album, “Hajimari No Yoru (A night of the beginning)” was originally released last year as same title. It was produced in more “Douyou”(Japanese mother goose) style to listen to. It is a music for solitude or close ties in one on one. And this new release is an adaptation to the original release. A piano trio greeted with viola and cero. Compared to the original album, it simplifies the sound with subtleties thus the aesthetic of dark and quietness, enhances more shadows and quieter moments.
“Hajimari No Yoru” is inspired and adaptation to the Japanese classic author, Junichiro Tanizaki’s masterpiece essay, “Inei-Raisan(In Praise of Shadow)”. The essay features an aesthetic of Japanese authenticity in minimalist lifestyle and rituals. Essay sees a various angle in design and textures that many business leaders, architects, and designers refer to this essay as of today. How profound Ezaki produced these two albums upon the literature. The latest piano trio version vinyl will be released in July 2024. Highly recommend listening to both albums and reading Tanizaki’s masterpiece.
David Douglas & Applescal | Démarrage
David Douglas is an electronic music producer and film producer, editor. David Douglas&Applescal aka Pascal Terstappen is the name for Douglas’s longtime music duo project and longtime fellowship. “Démarrage” is their latest album release from Atomnation. It is a physical music and the adaptation of cycling and Tour de France which is their passion and love for. Throughout Démarrage, it makes sense that Douglas has a film production background: various hints of the athleticism racing sounds gives the narrative visualization. A quiet build up to synchronize beats with synapses creates adrenaline with assertiveness in an electronic groove with the samples. It could potentially be their interpretation of musique concrete in the physical dynamics situation.
It is quite interesting to listen to the adaptation as soundtracks. And to those who particularly love cycling and triathlon, this would be worth listening to and experience their live performances.
